I just ...Pathway, I wish I knew an answer to that. I just know that the woman I saw really upset me. I realize that most of the people who get aid really are in need, but this was not the first time I've seen someone like her.. there have been times I couldn't even afford to buy milk for my kids, but then I see the abuse.. and it really really makes me upset. There are lots of families who "make too much" to "qualify" for help, and can barely put food on the table.
My family is better now, but only because we budget and plan and stretch every dollar.

I have no idea how to 'fix' the problem. We may never be able to... in life there will always be injustices... but some I just can't help feeling frustrated and upset by. (such as the fact that I personally know of two "men" who have HURT children... and only one has been 'caught' and punished. The other is out living free and my fear is he may be looking for another victim... THAT makes me angry. But I have no proof... so nothing I can do... anyway... like I was saying.. lots of injustices in the world. Like starving kids and so forth. I wish there was a way to fix it all.. I guess we all wish that.

+JMJ+Just another wallflowerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04207883874963165234noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6887138147140202573.post-40123613985669213272012-03-21T10:08:13.999-07:002012-03-21T10:08:13.999-07:00Sounds like you have first-hand experience of need...Sounds like you have first-hand experience of need and how difficult it is to cope. My dilemma (our?) is now to provide programs to help people while weeding out those who may be abusing the system. In my experience at the Food Pantry, by far the majority are honest, well-meaning people truly in need. THere are a very few who I suspect of gaming the system, but how to know? And the same applies to government programs, I think. How to know who really needs and who doesn't?LizRhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01276447984102053776noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6887138147140202573.post-63314309394683029752012-03-18T17:55:33.551-07:002012-03-18T17:55:33.551-07:00agree!agree!Mandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08095828644381519508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6887138147140202573.post-46643516507153259052012-03-18T12:50:55.704-07:002012-03-18T12:50:55.704-07:00No, I agree there IS a REAL NEED out there. I hav...No, I agree there IS a REAL NEED out there. I have no problem whatsoever with anyone being on aid or receiving help when it's needed. Yes the elderly, hard working people who are unemployed or under-employed... homeless... sick, disabled.. I just don't like seeing generosity abused.

I think it is wonderful that you work at a Food Pantry. I admire anyone that works to help others in need! :)

People like this woman deplete the resources that others NEED.
That's just not right. I don't know how she even sleeps at night to be honest. My conscience would kill me!

I know (personally) know people who are barely eating.. and yet don't "qualify". That is not fair. It's not right. I am thankful to churches and food kitchens and Meals On Wheels that help them. Especially when I know some elderly (and others, especially children), otherwise would go hungry without it. :(

Food Pantries, (as you know) are not getting the same donations that they were. Nationwide, the pantries are in need, especially peanut butter it seems... a much needed food to feed people.. I can't imagine taking something out of greed and thus taking it from a family who needs it.

This may be a little "TMI"... but I myself was on aid once, for almost a year. Through the generosity of others, I was given diapers, food, and baby formula, and things for my child that I couldn't give her. At Thanksgiving we were given a turkey. I was very thankful. Without that help, I don't know what would have happened to us. I did get food stamps.. and I used them carefully...and stretched them to the best of my ability. The check I got paid for diapers, rent, and my no-frills landline. No cell. No cable. No booze or lottery tickets. I literally counted and stretched each dollar. I have never, EVER forgotten what that was like. Several years ago, my hubby was laid off from work for 2 and a half months. We got a "taste" of that all over again. Something like that stays with you. Maybe that's why I feel as I do now. When someone is out there giving to and helping others, I don't want to see someone taking away who just wants something free. It's for the needy. Not the greedy. :( Does this make sense?

But anyway....after almost a year of living this way.. the day our circumstances thankfully changed, (thank you Jesus), I called and reported my change so I would no longer be taking what I didn't need. I could now buy our own food. It may not be steak, but now we could eat, and live, and be okay.

I hope you understand more where I am coming from, and not think I am just some jerk who doesn't believe in assistance and aid. Of course I do. At that time, we would have starved without it. My grandmother used to get food... she would have went hungry without it. My inlaws were elderly and sick.. and they received food they otherwise could not have gotten, and would have went hungry. I have a friend now who is going through hell with a terminally sick husband and three kids to feed. She was able to get aid, Praise God, and so her family can have food and clothes and diapers for the baby. Poverty, elderly, people in bad situations.. need loving people who are willing to reach out their hands to help.Just another wallflowerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04207883874963165234noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6887138147140202573.post-18542122975479552842012-03-18T11:26:57.755-07:002012-03-18T11:26:57.755-07:00I work at a Food Pantry, helping distribute food t...I work at a Food Pantry, helping distribute food to the poor. I'm sorry you witnessed someone who was seemingly working the system by using food stamps when she didn't seem to need to, but the people I deal with are hard-working unemployed people and chronically ill people, whether physical or mental. There is SO MUCH real need out there--are we to eliminate all government help for the poor because there are a very few who abuse the system? We see newborns who need diapers and formula.LizRhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01276447984102053776noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6887138147140202573.post-58118182743755374372012-03-16T19:16:42.796-07:002012-03-16T19:16:42.796-07:00Thank you so much Miss Kim!! I was dumb, and I listened. It amazes me how mean and hateful people can be. I'm back in my "bubble" though. :) Never should have ventured out to start with.

Heck, last night I received an "anonymous" email from someone that who informed me that he/she "hated" people like me "who homeschool" because that was nothing but "child abuse" and then called me some filthy names, wished nothing but evil on me, and hit send.
